Sweet summertime! Let’s be real, one of the best things about living in Florida is the weather. Summers may be HOT, but it’s prime time for some of our favorite fruits and vegetables. Do you know what’s in season? Either way, we are going to hook you up with some fresh summer knowledge. In this summer season, some of the sweetest fruits are ready to pick from the vine or tree: 

  • Strawberries

  • Watermelon

  • Blackberries

  • Raspberries

  • Cantaloupe

  • Figs (this is a short season starting in June so run out and grab yours)

  • Key limes/ limes

  • Tomatoes

  • Loquats (or Japanese plums)

  • Plums

  • Asian pears (a pear variety as big as your face!)

  • Grapefruit

  • Some oranges

 

 

 

You'll also need to grab some in season vegetables for your summertime cookouts and picnics:

  • Beets

  • Bell Peppers

  • Corn

  • Cucumbers

  • Eggplant

  • Green Beans

  • Jalapeno Peppers

  • Lima Beans

  • Okra

  • Radishes

  • Shallots

  • Sugar Snap Peas

  • Summer Squash

  • Yukon Gold Potatoes

  • Zucchini

 

Are you overwhelmed? We got you. Below are some fresh ideas for incorporating these delicious fruits and vegetables into your summer.

 

 

 

 

SUMMER SALAD: Grab your favorite leafy green and add sliced cucumbers, bell peppers, radishes grilled corn, and cherry tomatoes for a refreshing summertime salad. You could even whip up a lime, honey, and cilantro dressing for a little kick. Figs, watermelon, and blueberries make great topping for a spinach a bleu cheese salad as well.

 

INFUSED WATER: We all love a cool drink of water on these 90+ days! Try adding slices (or whole) fruits into water or seltzer. Squeeze in a little lime juice and float some blueberries. Freeze strawberries and black berries to keep you drink cool with out watering it down with ice. Slice up some Asian pears into bubbly water. The BEST part about infusing water is being able to carry it along anywhere you go! You’ll be hydrated PLUS you’ll be getting all those fruity benefits!

Optional: slice up some cucumber for an extra hydrating sip.

 

BACKYARD COOKING: Trust us when we say that you are going to want to have these in-season veggies handy when all your pals get together for backyard dinners! There is nothing better than throwing these veggies on the grill or mixing them up in a slaw or cold salad. Try an eggplant “steak” by prepping your eggplant and adding your favorite smoky marinade then sliding that bad boy on the grill. Shallots will add a perfect kick of flavor to your favorite coleslaw recipe. Enjoy a creamy corn and jalapeno “salad” either hot or cold. Potatoes, squash, zucchini, and green beans are all PERFECT for tossing in some seasoning and olive oil. Then, you can wrap it up in a foil pouch and set it on the grill!

Optional: use Yukon potatoes to make some delicious potato salad. Add a twist by including a little bit of sauerkraut.

 

SWEET SUMMER SMOOTHIES: if you want to add some sweetness to your summer smoothies, try adding figs or berries. You could also use oranges or loquats (be sure to remove the seeds) in a tropical flavored smoothie.
