Why Stay Hydrated?

DYK? Water makes up a large percentage (~60%) of our body. Without water it would be impossible for your body to complete its necessary daily functions and activities. It aids with digestion, flushes out waste, lubricates joints, regulates your body’s temperature, and helps deliver oxygen to the body.[1]

So, before you run off to attend your July 4th party this year, stop to think about your body and its needs. If you are spending the day at the beach, the pool, an outside BBQ, or any event out in that HOT sunshine- It’s important to stay HYDRATED.

Here are 4 quick and easy snacks you can include to keep you and your family/friends hydrated this summer:

1.Fruit Popsicles

2. Mixed Fruit Salad

3. Sliced Watermelon

4. Cucumber, Tomato, & Mozzarella Salad

Here are other fruits and veggies to help you ‘eat your way to hydration':

  • 97% water: Cucumbers

  • 96% water: Celery

  • 95% water: Tomatoes, radishes

  • 93% water: Red, yellow, green bell peppers

  • 92% water: Cauliflower, watermelon

  • 91% water: Spinach, strawberries, broccoli

  • 90% water: Grapefruit

It should go without saying that carrying a water bottle makes it easier to remember to hydrate, so try not to leave home without one. Amazon has some great ones (click here)! Since water both hydrates and flushes waste out of our system, enjoying ANY water-rich fruit or veggie is ideal for the summer heat. So, make sure you load up on those water packed foods to feel great all day!

And remember: if you find yourself on campus, you can always snag a refreshing drink, fruit cup, or salad at one of our convenience stores on campus, such as Outtakes and Ozzies. Have a safe, hydrated, and happy 4th!
