Summer is just around the corner! Which means an abundance of fruits and vegetables become more readily available.

More variety? Yes, please! 

Why should we eat seasonally?

When produce is grown in its proper season and under the appropriate growing conditions, it exhibits all of its natural nutrients. Studies have shown that some crops can have up to three times more nutrients when grown in season. Foods that have had the chance to fully ripen before they’ve been picked will have a stronger and a more well defined taste which makes them even more delicious! You get the best tasting, healthiest food available and not to mention you save on some major $$change$$!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Why do you save money?

Well, when you buy food that’s at its peak in supply it actually costs less for the farmers and distributers to harvest and transport the produce to the grocery store. Therefore, the cost of produce is down yet the quality is up. Win-Win!

Plus, the produce is less likely to be traveling half way across the world and more likely be grown locally.

 

 

 

Why is eating local food important?

Eating locally benefits the environment and it supports the local economy. Another awesome perk is that you'll most likely be able to talk one on one with the farmer who actually grew the produce that you may be purchasing. It's cool to be able to ask the farmers their process of growing certain foods.

The next time you’re at the grocery store or at a Farmer’s Market, make sure you get some tasty, vibrant, and healthy produce that will make you glow from the inside out. Be adventurous and try some new fruits and veggies this summer that you can incorporate into your daily diet. A few of my summer favorites are cucumbers, tomatoes, summer squash, watermelon, corn, green beans, lettuce, strawberries, cantaloupe, cherries, blueberries, and peaches. Along with experimenting with seasonal produce around town, UNF has a few places on campus to dine at where you can experiment with your new tastes. Make your own colorful pita at Pita Pit by putting a variety of different veggies inside or create a vibrant salad at Chop'd and Wrap'd. The combinations are endless!
