Pick Your Own Salad Event at the Ogier Gardens

National Nutrition Month is off to a wonderful start here at UNF! Already, we've hosted Picnic on the Green where we handed out Tandoori Chicken burritos, a Vegan Cooking Demo, a Garden Market fresh from Ogier Gardens, and plenty of Garden workshops. If you missed out on these events, don't worry: there are so many more events to participate in this month.

Tomorrow, UNF Dining Services and Ogier Gardens are hosting a Pick Your Own Salad Event at our very own 1-acre organic garden. It will be hosted at 11am in the Ogier Gardens on campus, at the far end of Lot 18. This event is very unique, and it's my favorite event from National Nutrition Month last year.

The event begins with an informational chat about the Ogier Gardens, and why organic farming is important to our environment. The staff that works and volunteers at the garden are so incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. We were also taught about different aspects of the Ogier Gardens and how we, as students and faculty, can benefit from and support the gardens through volunteering.

After this little chat, we were led about the grounds and shown the various vegetables, flowers, herbs, and fruits that were in season. Our guide gave us lots of fun facts and information about the different types of food the Ogier Garden is growing, and what flavors they can add to a salad or meal. Along the way, you could pick anything you'd like for your salad bowl: talk about farm-to-table! I went for some of the traditional salad veggies, but also grabbed lots of things I had never tried before like kholrabi and pea sprouts. The garden is a great place to learn about new foods and this event is the perfect way to taste them too!

After everyone picked out all their salad toppings, one of the Chartwells chefs hosted a dressing cooking demo. They used fresh ingredients from the garden, and some pantry staples to whip up new spins on classic vinaigrettes. And, of course, we got to try them all and add whichever we liked to our salad!

This event is such a fun and relaxing way to learn more about healthy salads and spend time in the gardens! No bowl necessary- free mason jars and salad shakers are provided to all attendees.

I'll see you there tomorrow!
