A Healthy and Delicious Valentine's Day at UNF

The first thing I think of when I hear “Valentine’s Day” is chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate! Valentine’s Day seems to be filled with everything sweet and delicious in the shape of a heart.  It is easy to get wrapped up in all the sweet treats during this holiday, but I am here to help make sure you enjoy your chocolate without going overboard.

The café is sure to have delicious desserts on their daily menu, but for the holiday of love, they are serving chocolate covered strawberries. This is one of my favorite desserts for many reasons. Often when I have dessert, I end up taking way more than the recommended serving size. With chocolate covered strawberries, it is easy to not overeat because they are already perfectly portioned out. Another obvious reason they are a great dessert is you are not only getting chocolate but also some fruit! This little heart shaped fruit is packed full of fiber, vitamin C, and polyphenol antioxidants, which help fight inflammation. As if you needed another reason to eat this delectable treat!

If you find yourself spending most of your day in the library and can’t make it to the café, Starbucks will also be having a few specials to celebrate the holiday. The Cherry Mocha Frappuccino is a popular Valentine’s Day treat but be careful as it is a treat and does not replace a healthy meal. A grande with 2% milk and whipped cream has 400 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 51 grams of sugar; this can add up quickly. Instead of getting a regular grande, a short with nonfat milk and no whipped cream will help you get your sweet fix of this yummy drink without any guilt. It is important to realize that this drink is a dessert rather than a cup of coffee. By ordering the smaller size you are still able to enjoy the drink without unwanted extra calories, fats, and sugars.

However, if you are looking for a tasty treat with hidden nutrition then head on over to Jamba Juice and try their new 'Secret Lovers' Smoothie. It's packed with 30g protein, 9g fiber (more than 25% of your daily intake, which is really good), and over 126% of your daily intake for Vitamin A! It's filled with chocolate protein, milk, strawberries, kale and chia seeds. Such a delicious and satisfying chocolate treat for your taste buds!

Like many other holidays, eating on Valentine’s Day is all about moderation. Feel free to spoil yourself with some heart shaped chocolate or candy. But remember to savor your treat because you truly enjoy it!
