Behind the Scenes at the Osprey Café


As you walk into the Osprey Café, you immediately notice all of the enticing aromas, the beautiful array of food options, and the hundreds of students scattered across the cafeteria and think to yourself, “How does the Osprey Café do it??” Well, I am here to give you a behind the scenes look at what it takes to work at one of the most visited dining areas on campus!

Hi! My name is Vanessa, and I have been an employee at the Café since the Fall of 2018 as a food prep worker. My duties include: cutting produce (if you see fresh pineapple at the pantry there’s a chance it’s likely done by me!), serving breakfast and/or lunch, and making sure the pantry and condiment bars are always full of food and remain clean.

My coworkers are always so kind, ​hardworking, and take pride in the quality of the food that they offer to students, staff and faculty. The Café has chefs and cooks that come in as early as 6:00am to prepare the meals for the day to make sure food is being served at correct times. A day's work could include receiving orders from various shipments, planning schedules, triple-checking ingredients for the day's recipes, organizing food recovery pick up times, answering consumer requests, and more! During meal times, the kitchen stays on its toes by bringing out more food to be served if needed, working hard to reduce cross-contamination, and by keeping all food service areas, utensils and dining areas clean and sanitized. My coworkers and I work hard to make sure each and every individual feels welcomed when entering the Osprey Café by providing top notch customer service and a multitude of different food choices!

Check out this interview between one of my coworkers, Viktoria and I on her point of view working at the Café:

Me: What do you love most about working at the Osprey Café?

Viktoria: I enjoy working at all the action stations (pizza station, the grill, salad bar, etc…). I am cross-trained so I can work anywhere in the café. Another thing I love about the café, is how close all the employees are, we are like a big family.

Me: What is your favorite dish to make?

Viktoria: Honestly, I do not have a favorite dish because all the food made here is so delicious and nutritious.

Me: So, what food do you prepare for the café?

Viktoria: I make the soups every day from scratch!

All in all, I love working at the café inclduing everything that Viktoria said and so much more! All employees care and respect each other and I have never had a bad day.
