What is Lend-A-Wing?

The Lend-A-Wing Pantry is a Student Government Executive Agency dedicated to serve the basic needs of students. The agency was founded in 2012 by students, for students. Anyone that is enrolled in at least one credit hour at the University of North Florida (with an Osprey 1Card) may anonymously receive free food each day (wow!). The organization keeps its students health in mind by utilizing a category system to promote a balanced diet. No longer is the checkout process weight-based but now focuses on food categories such us breakfast, veggies, soups, drinks, and more. Each category has a number of items allowed at checkout. Not only does the pantry provide food but also hygienic products and school supplies. This pantry is located at Hick’s Hall, building 53, Room 1202. The hours vary each semester so make sure to check their Facebook page to determine when they are open.

The pantry even offers fresh, local produce with its Lend-A-Green program. Produce is donated from the on campus Frederick and Ophelia Tate Ogier Gardens to the pantry for distribution. This program was established in 2015 with distributing over 75 pounds of fresh produce in the first year and have since increased production in 2016-2017 school year up to 170 pounds.

Lend-A-Wing is certainly making strides on campus to ensure our ospreys stay healthy with the contribution of Ogier Gardens as well as UNF Dining Services. Since Lend-A-Wing was first founded, UNF Dining Services has been offering their support. UNF Dining Services has hosted special events that have addressed food insecurity on campus. Some of these programs include Project Clean Plate, where UNF Dining Services challenged students to make efforts to reduce waste at the Osprey Café. And guess what? They have donated over $250 in food purchases to Lend-A-Wing since they have reached their goal of reducing food waste!

UNF Dining Services also partnered with Ellen DeGeneres and Cheerios in the One Million Acts of Good project, where UNF Dining Services packaged together MATTER boxes that were donated to Lend-A-Wing. What is a MATTER box, you ask? It’s a box that contains products from General Mills including apple sauce, cheerios, peanut butter, granola bars as well as words of kindness. This collaborative effort between students and staff helped create over 200 MATTER boxes. Check out the video of their efforts!

UNF Dining Services takes food insecurity very seriously and hopes to continue making strides toward helping its community and ending hunger on campus. You can stay updated on what UNF Dining Services is up to by following them on Facebook or visiting their website. Want to see what's new with the Lend-A-Wing pantry? Want to help out?
