Vegan/Vegetarian Options at UNF (Part 1)

Vegetarian and veganism are on the rise and college campuses everywhere are striving to keep up! Fortunately for you, the ospreys are ahead of the game. Since UNF has integrated almost three hundred acres of wildlife preserves and a self-sustaining organic garden into their campus, it’s only natural that they have plenty of plant-based options available on campus. Keep scrolling to learn more about some of our favorite plant-based meals on campus.

The Boathouse:

A fan favorite, the Boathouse is known for its sports broadcasting and beer on tap. This on-campus restaurant and bar has a great atmosphere to hang out with friends in between classes, to stop by for snack, or even to get some homework done in the backroom (which is open to the public) when the library is too crowded. There are several options here for all the veg lovers so make sure to look out for our vegan and vegetarian icons on our menu.

#1: Vegetarian Chipotle Burger:

The first item on our watchlist is the black bean veggie burger. Served with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and sundried tomato cream cheese, this burger is both filling and satisfying. This is a perfect option for vegetarians out there. When I order this meal, I ask for the cream cheese on the side and a lettuce wrap to replace the bun to add a satisfying crunch to every bite.

#2: Healthy Osprey Salad:

This salad has several fresh and satisfying veggies for a totally colorful meal. Fresh kale, spring greens, edamame, carrots, cucumber, tomato, red onion, strawberry-balsamic vinaigrette... what’s not to love?

#3: Caesar Salad:

Sometimes a classic caesar salad really just hits the spot. Dive into some homemade croutons and creamy dressing any day of the week.

#4: If you have a sweet tooth or need some comfort food after that big exam, the Boathouse has thick milkshakes, onion rings, top-notch tater tots, and crunchy french fries for all your fried food needs. This makes the Boathouse a great hangout to kick back and relax after a stressful week of classes!

Boathouse also has a 'Deal of the Year'. Get in on their all-you-can-eat salad bar available Monday to Friday from 11am to 2pm. What’s that, say it louder for the people in back? ALL YOU CAN EAT! For $5.99, you can be rolling in plant foods in between class. Head on over the Boathouse this week to check it out.

Chopped and Wrapped:

Around UNF, Chopped and Wrapped is known for their create-your-own wrap and salad bar. This is my go-to campus lunch choice! Upon entering, you are asked if you would like a wrap or a salad. You are then given protein options, which include tofu, black beans, and chickpeas, in addition to five toppings. There are dozens of options and endless combinations. Some of my favorite add-ons are apples (which are available seasonally), corn, green onion, sesame seeds, and green bell peppers. There are also plenty of salad dressing options for both vegans and vegetarians.

This on-campus hot spot also features the Vegetarian Greek Wrap with romaine lettuce, cucumber, black olives, tomatoes, red onion, garbanzo beans, pepperoncini, feta cheese, and greek dressing. This can be a great option if you have no idea where to begin. In addition to salads and wraps, vegetable sushi is also available in the cooler at Chopped and Wrapped. This makes a great refreshing option on those hot Floridian days.

Starbucks:

Looking for a pick me up? Treat yourself to your favorite coffee with soy, almond, or coconut milk. Starbucks caters to our veg-heads with lots of drink and snack options! Some great snacks include nuts and dried fruit, multigrain bagels, oatmeal, and dark chocolate bars, Hippeas puffed chickpeas, and sea salt potato chips. This venue is the perfect spot to grab some caffeine and a snack all in one trip before hitting the books and the library next door.
